Here is the latest blog from the museum’s wonderful Learning and Access Intern, Ellen. Ellen is a 3rd year History and Politics student here a Aberdeen University who worked with the museum for 10 weeks over summer.
In my last blog I wrote about the learning aspect of my role, another part of my internship was evaluating access. This time I was let loose around the public, rather than inanimate objects in the store. My communication and research skills were put to the test when I was surveying visitors about how they heard about King’s Museum. The findings from this survey will allow the marketing team to distinguish how people access information about the museum and how this information can be made more readily available through different means.
I’ve always enjoyed speaking to the public, and doing this survey I was able to interact with visitors who came to the museum. Everyone was really friendly and more than willing to participate. My internship with King’s Museum has really opened up my eyes to the world of museums. Never before did I know so many professionals played a part in the running of a museum. I’ve learned that museums have a lot more to offer than just history and facts through exhibitions; they are also a great place to learn new things which you may never have considered learning about before and discovering artefacts which you may never have known existed. I am so glad I applied for this internship, I’ve had so much fun, learnt so many useful life lessons and met some interesting and insightful people and I am more than excited to continue working with King’s Museum after my 10 weeks are up.
