Let Loose on the Public – Internship Update

Here is the latest blog from the museum’s wonderful Learning and Access Intern, Ellen. Ellen is a 3rd year History and Politics student here a Aberdeen University who worked with the museum for 10 weeks over summer.

In my last blog I wrote about the learning aspect of my role, another part of my internship was evaluating access. This time I was let loose around the public, rather than inanimate objects in the store. My communication and research skills were put to the test when I was surveying visitors about how they heard about King’s Museum. The findings from this survey will allow the marketing team to distinguish how people access information about the museum and how this information can be made more readily available through different means.

I’ve always enjoyed speaking to the public, and doing this survey I was able to interact with visitors who came to the museum. Everyone was really friendly and more than willing to participate. If you were surveyed by me – LUCKY YOU and thank you for helping us to make King’s Museum’s marketing strategy more effective and tailored to the need of the visitor.

My internship with King’s Museum has really opened up my eyes to the world of museums. Never before did I know so many professionals played a part in the running of a museum. I’ve learned that museums have a lot more to offer than just history and facts through exhibitions; they are also a great place to learn new things which you may never have considered learning about before and discovering artefacts which you may never have known existed. I am so glad I applied for this internship, I’ve had so much fun, learnt so many useful life lessons and met some interesting and insightful people and I am more than excited to continue working with King’s Museum after my 10 weeks are up.

If you want to find out more about Ellen’s intern experience you can read her last blog here, and see a wee video on the Museum’s YouTube channel here. We always love to hear from our visitors, so if you have any comments about King’s Museum or the Zoology Museum comment below!

About uoamuseums

The University of Aberdeen's Museums include King’s Museum and the University's Zoology Museum. The museums can claim to be Scotland's oldest, with records of museums and collections as far back as the late 17th century. Thanks to their status as a Recognised Collection of national significance, the Zoology Museum’s displays are currently being improved, while King's Museum hosts changing exhibitions drawn from across the collections, particularly those formerly in Marischal Museum. Visitors are warmly welcomed to the museums, and there are no charges for admission. Marischal College now houses the Museums Collections Centre, caring for and conserving many of the collections.
